» PEREZ E D'AMBROSIO VINCONO A MONTECARLO

Barwa Addax Team Comunicato ufficiale Gara 1

Sergio Pérez dominated the GP2 Series first race, which took place today at the street circuit of Monaco. His team-mate at Barwa Addax Team, Giedo van der Garde also made a great fightback and finished in a creditable sixth position.

Sergio Pérez dominated proceedings from start to finish and the Mexican driver , after a perfect start made absolutely sure that there was only going to be one winner today. Sergio started from second on the starting grid, just 33 thousandths of a second behind pole position. After a flying start, he took the lead before the end of the first straight and from this moment on he set a race rhythm which pulled him away from all his rivals. The only thing that troubled him was the safety car on lap fifteen . He had built up a lead of 9 seconds over his closest rival and the problem was he hadn’t as yet made his pit stop, with compulsory change of tyres. The Barwa Addax Team reacted quickly and carried out their pit stop perfectly, which meant they held on to the lead. As soon as the race got under way again, Sergio started to pull away once more from the rest of the field, including the fastest lap time on lap 25. In the last few laps he slowed down so as not to take any risks and ensure victory. He even had to fend off attacks from a rival considered to be the King of Monaco in the last few seasons.

Giedo van der Garde, had set the twelfth fastest time in qualification and on a circuit that is so difficult to overtake, he managed to climb to sixth at the chequered flag, which meant picking up his first points of this season’s campaign. It also guarantees a great start position for tomorrow, as he begins from third. Giedo has driven a fine race, considering the handicap of being in the middle of the main peloton of drivers with very little opportunity of making any improvement. The safety car jeopardized his progress, but both van der Garde and Barwa Addax Team were able to react efficiently enough so that he did not lose his position in the race. He is very hopeful for tomorrow’s second race because, if nothing strange happens, he will have every opportunity to show his true capacity in the race and thereby consolidate his progress in this year’s championship.

Sergio Pérez having made history here in Monaco has also taken the overall lead in the driver’s championship and Giedo has kept his twelfth position but with his first points in the bag. Barwa Addax Team has made a big jump in the overall team standings and has moved up to second overall in the team classifications. The team and drivers are now in their rightful place in the overall rankings particularly considering that this is the second year running they have won at the legendary Monaco circuit.

Dams - Comunicato ufficiale Gara 2

The DAMS team met with success in the second round of the GP2 Series Championship in Monaco thanks to Jérôme d'Ambrosio's victory in race 2. The results in qualifying did not do justice to the team's and drivers' performances. A mix-up in the final laps helped a large number of the French squad's rivals to improve their times under yellow flags, when Jérôme and Ho-Pin Tung slowed to respect the regulations.

On Friday, d'Ambrosio was in seventh place on the grid, and the Belgian drove an intelligent race avoiding the traps of the Monaco circuit to finish in that all-important eighth place, which gave him pole for Saturday's round. He took full advantage of it in race 2 and scored his first GP2 Series victory, and also DAMS' first win in Monaco. Ho-Pin hit the rail hard on Friday, and ran into mechanical problems the next day despite showing a good turn of speed in practice.

DAMS will set out for the next round in Turkey in two weeks time with their morale at an all-time high.

Loïc David, General Manager: “It's a great joy and a reward for the whole team and for Jérôme. The results in qualifying were very frustrating, but we drew positive energy from them for the second race. Jérôme controlled his rivals perfectly on Saturday and scored a magnificent victory. Ho-Pin put on a good display in practice but fell victim to Monaco's pitfalls and then mechanical gremlins. We're going to do everything possible to score more points in Turkey.”

Jérôme d'Ambrosio
Race 1: 8th time, 7th on the grid, 8th at the finish
Race 2: pole position, winner

“I'm absolutely delighted to have scored my first victory in GP2, above all in Monaco! The team did a great job preparing the car and we should have had a good result on Friday. On Saturday, I made a good start and I had to fight to keep my position in the lead in Sainte Dévote. After that, I was able to control my rivals. I felt at home and confident and even the arrival of the safety car didn't upset me. It's great for everybody. Now, our championship challenge is well launched.” *

Ho-Pin Tung
Race 1: 14th on the grid, rtd
Race 2: 21st on the grid, rtd

“My overall result isn't very positive but I share the whole team's joy in Jérôme's great victory. I was disappointed after qualifying as I should have been better placed on the grid. On Friday, I got caught out after the tyre change. They probably weren't warm enough and I hit the kerbs in the swimming pool too hard. The car slammed into the guardrail and that was that. On Saturday, I was battling mid-field when I had a mechanical problem. That's racing! I'm going to learn the lessons from this weekend and it'll be better in Turkey.”
